Tristate XLRI Alumni Meet: Oct 6th 5.30 PM

Gerry Farias and I have been in touch with some of you offline to finalize the details of  the planned XLRI Alumni Meet on Saturday October 6th evening.  We have finalized AKBAR RESTAURANT (at Route 1 South in Edison NJ), as the venue based on the feedback received.  The details are as under:

The tab is $35 per person – this just covers the dinner, drinks and gratuities for the service, and the PA system, etc.  You can confirm your participation by email with the headcount and later pay by cash or check at the door. The main idea of the meet is to show up with our love, affection and gratitude to Prof Sarin and Fr Abe and of course, you know how we do it – in large numbers. Many of us know Prof Sarin and Fr Abe - it'd be a delight to meet with them in person. 

Director Fr Abraham and Prof Sarin will share with us the many new developments at our alma mater, which has undergone a name change from `XLRI Jamshedpur' to `Xavier School of Management'.  Yes – we are now alumni of XSM !! 

As I understand, they'd share with us the many exciting new developments that XSM has in mind, including the new branding of XLRI as XSM to prepare for a global brand launch, a new second campus in New Delhi, a growing list of student exchange programs with B-schools around the world, a growing strong faculty that is recognized by industry by their books and research.  The objective is also to:

(a) Strengthen, and give some shape and form to, our existing alumni networks in the US/Canada, and                

(b) while it is not expected that any of us would cut checks overnight to the XEF – Xavier Endowment Fund, of which Prof Sarin is a Chairman (well, don't mistake me - of course, you are very welcome to do so if you are able to join the many that have done so with a large heart of gratitude) –we'd be discussing how best to contribute as US resident alumni to XEF over the next many years.

XL Get together in Dallas, TX- 19th May

We had a small gathering but big fun a couple weeks back. This time around we are planning a more elaborate one in one of the DFW area parks. Rev. Joseph M. Kennedy, S.J. died Sunday night, 12 February 2012. He was a Jesuit for 69 years and a priest for 56 years.

 Fr. Joseph M Kennedy SJ, was Director at XLRI from 1970 to 1973. He was also the Superor at Loyola School, Jamshedpur from 1962-1967 & again from 1976-1979

Spring 2010 New York XLRI Alumni Meet - thanks

Good show folks!  

Madhavi and I really appreciate the help from all, and the nice gesture to join in at short notice on a Sunday evening to meet with the visiting Director Fr E Abraham and Dr Jittu Singh.  

I think this year we folks in the New York area have kick-started the 2010 mid-year series of XLRI Alumni meets that usually happens (globally?) over the summer term.   In all 28 XL-lers confirmed and 21 actually made it - 9 of them with spouse and/or family; and a total of 9 kids. There you have it - the real XL spirit :)   

To get an idea of the spontaneity with which folks responded just imagine this - people drove to Edison NJ some with kids, from Baltimore MD (160 miles, 258 kms), King of Prussia (Philadelphia) PA (70m,125 km),  Andover (Boston) MA (hats off to this road warrior who flew in a day earlier to be here missing family time), Voorhees NJ (70m,111km), New Rochelle NY(53m, 85km), and others from all over NJ - Hillsborough, Plainsboro, Toms River, Princeton, Woodbridge, New York City (Staten Island), Jersey City, Weehawken.. did I miss anyone?;)   

   

On Tuesday evening Chaitanya said 'he feels sad'.  When I asked him the reason he said "everyone has gone now!" :( Yes, the house feels deserted even though it was only a few hours that everyone came to the meet-greet-sip-eat, 

We have lot of spiritual stock left - enuf for another get together anytime. If all agree, we can do it once more this summer, this time on a Saturday late morning/day time - may be by end or mid Aug - a beach outing or a bbq:) Lemme know yr thoughts.

Tristate (NJ-NY-CT) Alumni meet - Thanks

We had a crowd of enthu xlers who came to meet Fr Abraham and Dr Jittu Singh yesterday. Thanks to KNV and Madhavi for hosting the meet. Though some of us did offer to help, I know both of you spent a considerable amount of planning and executing - before, during & after.  

 

Thanks to those who could make it. There was an eclectic mix of ages and professions. From the usual Finance, IT and HR to neuro-science and performing arts. From people just married to those discussing colleges for their children to those were congratulated for their just born grand children.  But all warm xlers wanting to know more about others in the tribe. A special thanks to spouses who made it to the event.

 

There were the usual gasps at the loss of football field. There also was awe and proud at how the institute has grown and the future expansion as  Fr Abraham and Dr Singh shared the plans. Will recommend others scattered around the country not to miss this opportunity as the caravan makes a pit stop in your city.

Fr E Abraham & Dr. Jittu Singh are stopping over at the Bay Area during their cross country trip.  We have arranged a meetup at Sakoon in downtown Mountain View (on Castro between Dana & California) on Sunday April 18th at noon.  We have a separate room, & you can buy Indian buffet lunch at Sakoon @ $17.99 (+ taxes, tips).  The food is pretty good.  We also get beer or wine at 10% off.  Please confirm if you will attend.

US Visit by Dr. Jittu Singh and Fr. Abraham

Dr Jittu Singh and I will be travelling to the US to visit some universities for discussion on collaboration and exchange.. They are Cornell, Case Western, University of Minnesota, Stanford and University of Southern California. Bay Area Winter Alumni Potluck

For some reason, this report slipped though the cracks.

Alumni in the Bay area met for a Potluck on the 27th of December at Tipu (IR 96)'s home.

Here is Tipu's write up on the meet:

Warm & sunny new year greetings to all US XLers from the Bay Area. We had a well-attended potluck last Saturday. 30 XLers & their spouses attended, many with kids in tow (list below). Much beer was drunk (imported only, like the XLers) & anecdotes & emails exchanged. Everyone brought wonderful food which magically worked well together, with the piece-de-resistance for me being the chocolate fountain that Kieran Gonsalves so carefully set up. This was the first alumni get together for some of the folks since leaving XL. That & the look of happy surprise on faces of batchmates meeting after many years (like the final reels of a familiar Manmohan Desai saga), was well-worth the time to organize this. Shailley & Sheela took some photos, which are available here and at http://shailleysingh.posterous.com/. Feel free to leave comments. I have also been asked to put a disclaimer that due to the image cropping & similar technical constraints some people may look wider than they actually are. Unfortunately, camera batteries drained out & so not everyone who attended had their pictures taken. But that is a good reason to have another one of these & count everyone in for a group photo. We had a summer picnic & a winter potluck last year & hope to continue the tradition this year too.

First "get together" in DC

Hi,

For the record, yesterday the first ever get together of XLers took place in Washington DC, with two attendees: myself (BMD 1972) and Bhavesh Shah (BMD 1997).

I am based in Jakarta, Indoesia, visiting USA for a holiday and Bhavesh is based in DC, both originating from Mumbai (which we kept calling "Bombay").

So the topic during the get together was mostly "how things are/were back home in Mumbai and now in DC/ASEAN".

Bhavesh, excellent job in organising this first ever XLers' get together in DC and be ready for a larger one next time, when we can locate some more XLers in this part of the world!

XLRI Alumni Meet - Bay Area - a Report

This account of our alumni picnic on June 1st was a long time in coming, so without further ado:

The third day of May
My alma mater said to me
Call all my faithful
And come they will to me

Emails went & messages flew
Stones were turned & calls were made
And one by one our numbers grew
As our cyber stalking awoke the dead

And so on the first day of June
We gathered at the Park Ed Levin
In full flow by high noon
In nostalgia & networking heaven

Thusly on this warm summers day
Ye Olde XL smiled as its alumni
Gathered from far & away

20 XLers an-excelling
15 spouses an-espousing
11 children a-chilling
6 ‘Uncle Sam’ pizzas an-appeasing
4 packs of beer a-frothing

And with that rhymes & pun-ishment, I will crawl back to prose.

The picnic on June 1^st was the biggest in Bay Area in my 8 years here. Our numbers are growing, & by my estimate at the picnic we got approximately 40% of XLers who are here now. 60% of the attendees were at an XL alumni event for the first time. XLers from 4 decades were present. After a quite few years these are very encouraging statistics.

This email is cc-ed to many of you who I contacted via LinkedIn etc. If you aren’t a member of the XL California Yahoo Group, please sign up so that we can keep you abreast of what’s happening in our XL community. KP Naidu moderates this group. I have also created a short (12 question) survey for some feedback on the kind of interactions everyone would prefer. Please complete this when you have 10-15 minutes. Your help will be much appreciated. Some of you who attended the picnic have already completed a version of this. You don’t need to do it again.

Bay Area picnic June 1st (Sunday) at Ed Levin Park (Milpitas)

We have reserved a partially shaded picnic spot (‘Spring Valley’, picture below) at the Ed Levin Park in Milpitas for our Sunday Picnic. The event starts at 11am. We have a decent sized crowd with many first timers. If you are interested in attending, please respond to this survey ASAP. The weather forecast is not very sunny, so it should be a lot of fun. This is a great opportunity to know other XLers in the Bay Area & their families. Please spread the word to other Bay Area XLers. If this meet is a success we will have the momentum for future meet ups too.

How to Get There

Traveling on either Interstate 680 or 880, take the Calaveras Road exit in Milpitas. Drive east towards the foothills along Calaveras Road. Calaveras Road passes through the southern portion of Ed Levin Park. There are two main use areas in the park. The Sandy Wool Lake area is located north of Calaveras Road and the Spring Valley Pond area is located south of Calaveras Road. To reach the Sandy Wool Lake area, take a left turn off Calaveras Road onto Downing Road. Travel north along Downing Road to reach Sandy Wool Lake, the hang gliding area and the main trail use areas. To reach the Spring Valley Pond area, continue along Calaveras Road, past Downing Road and turn right into the park area to reach the Ranger station, Visitor Center and Spring Valley Pond. Spring Valley Golf Course parking and Club House is located across Calaveras Road from the Visitor Center.
