Bangalore : IIMC - XL Meet in October - Volunteers Needed

Hey folks:

I guess you all know about the II XL IIMC meet scheduled for 15th Oct. We need to take the opposition seriously. They seem determined to win this one judging by the flurry of mails between them.

Will keep you posted following our first meeting on Sept 5th. But those of you planning to play Footer, Cricket, Volleyball and Basketball --start yr training now.

Dear friends,

The 2nd XLRI - IIMC Alumni Meet at Bangalore is to take place on 15 October 2006. Last time we beat them at Football and Cricket while they beat us for the Quiz (with some help from Rekha & Vijayan Menon).

This time there could be an increase in the number of games and would include games like volley-ball, basket-ball, tennis, etc. besides cricket & football.

All alumni who are capable and interested in participating may please send their names to me so that we can do some organizing!!

Father Jesurajan received his training in mass communication and spent seventeen years in the Philippines, in India and in the USA teaching, training and researching varied areas of mass communication. Since 1984, besides teaching Managerial Communication and Corporate Image Building to regular students, he conducts in-company and training programmes on these and other related areas. He has been conducting workshops to CEOs and other senior level managers, in India and abroad. His experiences in training managers and his knowledge of the industry make him unique in this field of managerial communication. He is editor of the Institute’s journal, Management and Labour Studies.

Joined XLRI after 18 years of corporate experience in different capacities. Doctoral thesis on Corporate Rejuvenation, involved identifying strategies and processes by Indian firms to remain profitable post economic reforms. Research and teaching interests include Strategic Management; Rejuvenation and Turnaround Strategies; and Strategic Management of Professional services.

Chairperson of the Information Systems Area and the “Center for e-Business". He has thirteen years of teaching, research and consulting experience in business computing. Bhaswar Choudhury

In his doctoral work, he studied the value of information in a supply chain. His area of interest is in Modeling the Supply Chain and Production/Inventory System. He has published several research papers in International Journals and Conferences. Prior to joining academia he has worked for just under a decade, both in private and public sector in areas such as R&D and Operation. He is a holder of one patent and two copyrights.

Was a visiting scholar at the John Curtin International Institute, Curtin University, Australia; did doctoral work on foreign investments and their effect on domestic industry in India over the 1990s. The Aditya Birla Research Centre of the London Business School and the P. D. Agarwal TCI Foundation supported the doctoral work. Has published research papers and case studies in international journals; has worked on projects of DFID, UK and UNCTAD; Has previously worked in the industry and at Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur. Conducted management development programmes for international participants. His Research interests include Business Policy, Industrial Policy, Multinational Corporations, globalization of firms from developing economics, particularly enterprises from China.

D Israel

He qualified the National Educational Testing (Master’s Level) conducted by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi in 1988 and was awarded both Junior and Senior Research Fellowships for pursuing his doctoral thesis on Conjugal Power Structure in Purchase Decisions which he had completed in 1994 from Pondicherry University. Prior to joining XLRI, he had taught at Karunya Deemed University, Coimbatore and IMT-Ghaziabad. Areas of interest include Business Research Methods, Marketing Research, Data Analysis for Marketing Decisions and Service Loyalty Measurements. He has conducted Development Programmes on the Application of Statistical Tools through SPSS and has published several articles in the refereed journals.

D P Sinha

After about 36 years of corporate experience in public, private sectors and multinational (Hindustan Copper, Zuari Industries, Goa and BOC) D. P. Sinha opted for academia and joined XLRI in August 2006 in PM & IR Area. Prior to joining XLRI he was Corporate Vice President (HR) in Zuari Industries Ltd at Goa. He is a visiting professor at IIM, Kozhikode and SIBM, Pune. He has keen interest in Management Education and training. He has designed and conducted a number of management excellence programmes. His areas of interest are Strategic HR, Performance Measurement & Management, Balanced Scorecard, Reward and Compensation Management and Win-win Negotiations. He has attended a number of national and international programmes and conferences.

Professor Broca joined XLRI in June 2006. At the onset of his career, he served at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. On returning to India, he had a brief stint with Nestle India Ltd. Between 1991 to 2006, Professor Broca has held academic positions at the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Patiala, BITS Pilani, IIT Roorkee and IIM Kozhikode. His research interests currently focus on Statistics Education – classroom capsules/notes that contain new ideas to enrich teaching of traditional statistical concepts.

Debasis Pradhan
PGDRM (XIMB), *Doctoral Candidate (IRMA)

He was the recipient of AKRSP Fellowship for his specialisation in Rural Marketing at IRMA. His doctoral thesis seeks to understand and explain the influence of the marketing environment variables on the promotion mix decisions of the firms in the rural industries. The resultant models explain and to some extent predict the promotion mix decisions of the firms. Prior to joining IRMA, he has worked for more than two years as a consultant in power sector. Papers authored by him have been published as well as accepted for publication in reputed journals like ACRJ, IJRM, Vikalpa, IJTD, and in an edited volume of a book. His papers also feature in various international conference proceedings. He has authored five teaching cases in marketing area some of which are in different stages of review process for possible publication. In IRMA, he has handled sessions for the PGP students and Management Development Programme (MDP) participants. He was actively involved in the redesigning of Rural Marketing Course at IRMA. His current teaching and research interests include Promotional Marketing, Bottom of Pyramid (BOP) Marketing, and Marketing Theory. He is interested to undertake research in the Managerial School of Marketing theory.

Dr. E. M. Rao had been in industry as a Personnel and Industrial Relations Manager for more than 20 years and was associated with several reputed organizations including Warner - Hindustan, VST and IDL Industries Ltd., Hyderabad and later as an Advocate and Management Consultant. Dr. Rao was with the ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad as a Professor in Management for two years before joining XLRI in the year 1997. Dr. Rao conducted in-company training programmes in various organizations like Shriram Honda, Raymond Synthetics, IOC, HPCL, OIL, Tata Cummins, BEL, Ranbaxy, ITC, Goa Shipyard and Eicher. He has published more than 20 papers on personnel/human resource management, industrial relations and labour law. A life member of NIPM, IIRA, NHRD Network and NLLA. His areas of specialization include Industrial Relations, Labour Law, Disciplinary Action, Negotiation Skills, Performance Management, Potential Appraisal, Career Planning & Development and Managerial Skills/Effectiveness.
Dr Rao has edited the 6th edition (2004) of the famous "Law of Industrial Disputes", authored by Mr O P Malhotra. In addition, Dr Rao has authored the book titled "Industrial Jurisprudence" (2004).

Organizational Behaviour

Professor in Organizational Behaviour Area at XLRI Jamshedpur and currently Coordinator, Centre for HRD at XLRI. He has been in teaching, training and consulting since 1985. His areas of interest include organization development (OD), spirituality at work, cross-cultural issues in OB, personal effectiveness, and transformational / charismatic leadership. Received Best Research Paper Award from AIMS and Gold Medal for Best Doctoral Thesis. Dr. Srinivas presented his research at several international conferences.

Gourav Vallabh

A Gold Medallist in B.Com. and M. Com. He has worked with the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), Pune prior to joining XLRI. Published research papers in referred academic journals and presented papers in conferences. He has won the best paper award in XXV All India Accounting Conference. Has undertaken Consultancy assignments for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Bank of Baroda (BOB). Conducted in-company training programs for Syndicate Bank, Canara Bank and Scheduled Urban Cooperative Banks. Current areas of interest include Cost Management, US GAAP and Corporate Disclosure Practices, Risk Based Supervision (RBS), Risk Based Internal Audit (RBIA) and Lending Decisions.

Professional associations included organizations such as the Export-Import Bank of India, Reserve Bank of India, the Indian Planning, Commonwealth Secretariat, United Nations and the Asian Development Bank. Research interest include bond markets and their derivatives, empirical finance, development finance and conduct of exchange rate policy and management.

Joined XLRI in June, 2004. Has an eclectic profile developed over 30 years first as an academician-cum-administrator at XLRI and subsequently as a senior executive at Tata Steel. His earlier stint at the Institute, spanning 10 years, culminated as Dean for a 4-year term. He taught a variety of courses in the Organizational Behaviour, Economics and General Management areas in the postgraduate and executive development programmes. He also conducted a large number of in-company programmes for leading companies. At Tata Steel, he played a pivotal role in designing many of the HR systems and practices for which the company is renowned. He also spearheaded its learning centres for 20 years. He has now returned to XLRI as the “Tata Steel Chair Professor of Organizational Development.

Prof. Gurunathan has joined the institute recently, after completing his Fellow from IIMA. In his thesis he focused on the determinants of Executive Knowledge Management Behaviour. After working in corporate sector for one year, he took academic assignment. He was a Professor in Maharishi Institute of Management, Hyderabad prior to joining XLRI. He has more than four years of teaching and research experience in the area of macro-monetary economics, empirical finance, applied econometrics and time series analysis. He is actively involved in research relating to monetary policy transmission mechanism, liquidity adjustment facility, interlinkages between financial markets, etc. Prior to joining XLRI he was working at Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, where he was involved in both research and teaching activities in the area of economics. He has published several research papers in reputed journals, presented papers in various conferences, actively participated in various seminars/workshops. To his credit, he has qualifed UGC-NET (JRF) in Mathematical Economics.

Paul Fernandes ,S.J.

After graduating from XLRI in 1986, he worked at XIM, Bhubaneswar from 1989 till 1993, in the capacity of administrator and financial controller. He had the opportunity to study at various places Mangalore, Ahmedabad, Patna, Ranchi, Pune and understand the richness of our Indian culture and thought.

Pingali Venugopal
P.G. Diploma in Management & Fellow (Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad)

Post Graduate and Fellow in Management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, is currently the Dean (Academics) and Professor (Marketing) at XLRI, Jamshedpur. He has been a Marketing faculty at XLRI, Jamshedpur, since 1994. He has also been a visiting faculty to the Indian Institutes of Management in Ahmedabad, Calcutta and Lucknow and the American University of Armenia. Prior to his stint at XLRI, Prof. Venugopal held managerial positions for 10 years in the marketing divisions of two agribusiness companies.

Professor Venugopal has authored the books on “Marketing Channel Management: A Customer Centric Approach” and “Input Management, The State of the Indian Farmer: A Millennium study”. He has presented papers at national and international conferences as well as published articles in leading national and international journals. He has also been involved as a consultant with several projects for both the profit and non-profit sectors.

Pitabas Mohanty

He has more than five years of teaching experience in Investments and Corporate Finance. He is actively engaged in research in corporate finance and investments and has many publications in books and refereed journals. He has also consulted with a few companies in valuation of companies. He won the Best Young Teacher Award from AIMS in 2002. He got the first prize for two consecutive years in the Capital Markets Conference organized by the UTI Institute of Capital Markets. He also got the prestigious Citibank Research Excellence Award in IIM Bangalore. He has won the Best Research Paper Award from AIMS in 1999.

Pranabesh Ray

After about a decade of corporate experience, both in the private and public sector, Dr Ray has been teaching in XLRI for more than 15 years. His teaching, consulting and research are in the area of Human Resource Management with special emphasis on Managing Redundancy, Managing Negotiations, Performance Management, Union Management Corporation, and Employment Relations in the service sector. Published numerous papers in reputed journals.

Prithwiraj Nath (On Leave)
M.Sc. (Calcutta), Fellow (IIM Calcutta)

Has done doctoral research in the area of service performance measurement at IIM Calcutta. His areas of interest include marketing research, measurement of service quality and customer satisfaction, customer relationship management, Internet marketing and bench marking techniques for firm performance. He has published papers in international management journals and has presented his research in several international conferences.

R. K. Premarajan

Dr Premarajan has about 15 years of work experience as an academic and as a Practitioner. Currently he is also the L&T Scholar of HR. Prior to joining XLRI, he worked on the faculty of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of National Dairy Development Board, and with the HRD Division of Larsen & Toubro Limited. His areas of consulting, training and research are Competency Based HRM, Organizational Career Development, and Assessment & Development Centre. He also teaches a course on Organizational Structure, Design and Change.

Rajeev Sharma
MBA (Devi Ahilya University , Indore), Fellow (IIM Bangalore)

Did an empirical study on "Control and Coordination of Global Software Projects" as a part of doctoral dissertation at IIMB. He was awarded UNESCO-IFIP grant for his doctoral work. Current interest includes valuation of IT investments, insourcing and outsourcing of software development projects, new product development, and strategic use of information technology resources in networked world. He is also a member of Association of Information Systems (AIS) and Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) at Bangalore. Has published several papers and attended international conferences. His academic achievements include Director's Merit Certificate for being the best Doctoral Student at IIMB. Prior to joining XLRI he has worked in the corporate world as an investment research analyst.

Rajiv Misra

He started his career with Ashok Leyland and then moved to Tata-Robins-Fraser (TRF), an Engineer-to-order project organization. In his tenure of twenty years at TRF, he worked in various functions: Manufacturing, Planning, Procurement, HR and IT. He was a Senior Divisional Manager at TRF when he left to join XLRI in June 2005. While at TRF, he was associated with XLRI as a Visiting Faculty. His interests are in the areas of Production Planning, Project Management, Theory of constraints and managing Manufacturing-Supply Chain interfaces.

Ram Kumar Kakani

Worked in the corporate sector for four years; was a visiting scholar at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; did doctoral work on the relationship between diversification strategy and financial performance of Indian business groups. His recent scholastic achievements include the best paper award at 2002 IBER Conference held in USA. The Aditya Birla Research Centre of the London Business School and the National Stock Exchange of India supported his research work; has published several research papers in international journals, and has acted as a referee in professional journals; has been a visiting faculty at other premier management and training institutes, has provided consultancy for various organizations including Kirloskar Brothers and NABARD. Areas of interest include Business Analysis, Corporate Finance, Diversification Strategy and Study of Business Groups.

Reshmi Mitra (On Leave)

Teaching, research, training and consulting interest in industrial economics, entrepreneurial management, gender studies and small business management. Has served as a consultant to the government on developmental issues. Published extensively in national and international journals. Has been a Fulbright scholar at the Harvard Business School and visiting faculty and guest lecturer at several universities abroad.

S Jayapandian

Professor Jayapandian joined XLRI in June 2006. He has 15 years in development banking, 11 years in industry and 18 years in teaching and part-time consultant experience. Published two books and third book is under print, subscribed more than 30 articles in leading papers and magazines, recipient of three national awards for outstanding services, achievements and contributions. His area of specialization are financial accounting, cost and management accounting, financial management, international finance, security analysis and portfolio management and derivatives.

Sabyasachi Sengupta
Chartered Accountant (ICAI), Cost Accountant (ICWAI) and Company Secretary (ICSI).

Has worked in various organizations across a few industries for eight (8) years before joining XLRI (Jamshedpur) in the year 1998. Areas of expertize, specialization and interest includes (amongst others), Management Accounting (Financial & Cost Accounts), Corporate Financial Management, Working Capital Management, Financial Planning and Control, Project Appraisal, Mergers, Acquisitions & Corporate Restructuring, Direct & Indirect Taxation, Corporate Laws & their implications etc. While in industry he had specialized in developing Accounting & Costing Systems, structuring MIS reporting, dealings with Banks and Financial Institutions and in various fields of Management Consultancy services.

Sarosh J Ghandy

JRD Tata Professor of Business Ethics Mr Ghandy was the Resident Director of Tata Motors. MD of Telcon. He is on the Board of several companies. Asia Pacific Director of Caux Initiatives for Business. He is involved in various initiatives of the corporates in Corporate Governance and Business Ethics. A well respected senior executive in the business world.

Sharad Sarin
B.E. (Jodhpur), PGDBA (IIMA), Ph.D. (Pune)

Prof Sarin has been with XLRI since 1976. Before joining XLRI, he worked in industry for four years. He is currently on the Boards of XLRI Jamshedpur, Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and Tata Refractories Limited. Over the last 30 years, he has been a corporate consultant to several large and well-known Indian companies. He has conducted more than 100 programmes and workshops on Strategic Marketing, Industrial Marketing, Relationship Marketing, Strategic Management and Customer Satisfaction, both in India and abroad. He has been Visiting Faculty to IIM-Ahmedabad, University of Colorado at Boulder and Rhode Island in the USA. His areas of interests are: General Marketing, Industrial Marketing, Competition and Globalization, Relationship Marketing and Marketing’s Role in Development.

Soumendra N. Bagchi

Joined as faculty after completing the FPM programme from IIM, Ahmedabad. Worked in a public sector organization for nearly five years after graduating as civil engineer. In his doctoral dissertation he studied the phenomenon of employee retaliation within organizations. His areas of interest include qualitative research methods, human resource practices in service sector and industrial relations.

Suma Damodaran

Dr. Raghu Ram has been in academics for 16 years with Wildlife Institute of India- Dehra Dun, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research-Mumbai and till recently with IIM Calcutta. He was a Fulbright Environment Leadership Fellow at Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA. His work explores the environmental governance, policy, development, and environment interface. Raghu Ram has a master’s degree in limnology and PhD in biodiversity impact assessment. He teaches environment and natural resource management. He is co-editor of Reconciling Environment and Economics (IGIDR, Mumbai 2003) and editor of Uttar Pradesh Environment Monitor-2003 (World Bank, New Delhi 2004). He was the Member Secretary and Project Coordinator of Environmental Economics Research Committee that sponsored 61 field research projects aimed to build environmental economics research capacity in India (2000-2003). He was National Project Coordinator of Protected Area Network Cell at the Wildlife Institute of India (1994-1995). His publications cover habitat evaluation models, biodiversity impact assessment, water and air quality governance and environmental policy. He is now a consultant to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India to evaluate community forestry institutions.

Dr. Krishnan does research on transformational leadership, value systems of individuals in organizations, and Indian philosophy. He teaches advanced courses on "Leadership, Influence, and Power," "Indian Philosophy for Leadership Excellence," and "Impression Management" to fulltime students, and conducts workshops on "Transformational Leadership" for senior executives.
