Our target is to cross Rs.20 crores by the end of April 2013.This means we have to raise nearly USD 4 million.To meet this target, we plan to have alumni get-togethers in U.S.A., Dubai, and Singapore, besides alumni meets in the country.

Some of you are keen to know : what would XLRI do with the funds?

1. Upgrade the existing Physical Infrastructure to world-class standards.The new campus may cost us around Rs.50 to Rs.60 crores.
2. Create Chair Professorship. Each Chair would need around Rs.4 to 5 crores.
3. Scholarships or loan to the needy students.
4. Support Global Research.
5. Support the expenses for Global Branding of XLRI.
6. Support the social initiatives of XLRI in the area of education for poor, rural entrepreneurship and alike on a sustained basis.

A news write-up in April 5 Telegraph stated that IIM-A has set a target to raise Rs.250 crores, that is, approximately USD 50 million. By April 5, they have raised about Rs.8 crores, and in the Golden Jubilee Celebration held in December 2011, the alumni promised to contribute Rs.38 crores. I am confident Excellors would be equally generous.

Support XLRI Alumnus Relief Work in Leh

I am writing with an appeal to support the relief work which two of our alumnus - Gargi Banerji (88batch) and Sunil Pillai (87batch) - are doing. Their venture www.Pragya.org has been involved with sustainable development for the indegenous communities in the Himalayan region for more than a decade - and has earned international recognitions for their work.

You must be aware of the pioneering work being done in the Himalayan region and at Leh by PRAGYA (www.pragya.org), a not-for-profit organisation started by Gargi

(XL-88) and Sunil Pillai (XL-87).

 

The on the ground  situation is truly bleak after the recent natural calamity.

 

To give you an idea, a migrant worker camp in Phyang village (one of the places where PRAGYA delivers education and health services) had 250 inmates, of which only 104 have survived. Several villages have been destroyed and many families have lost everything - houses, crops, belongings - and half their members as well.

 

PRAGYA has taken up rescue and relief operations through its field office in Leh. Pragya Leh staff and members from Gurgaon / other offices have put together a volunteer team that is carrying out rescue and evacuation of survivors to hospitals in the area, and supply of essentials (medicines, blankets, food, hygiene kits, etc.). There is enormous work to be done for reconstruction and helping the people of Leh get back on their feet.

 

They could do with additional help from every quarter.

 

Contributions could be in cash and kind. They have a list of relief requirements for the immediate relief (essential supplies)- but those who would want to

contribute in kind would need to check the need status on the day of contribution.

Yes a whole lot of xlers in Singapore ran around the botanic gardens and felt really good to be a part of the community...in just a few hours and few steps we were able to build a great camaraderie and friendships. thanks to everyone who turned up and showed their support to xl and to the cause.

as you all may be aware by now, we were running to raise $ 5k for the XLRI Social Entrepreneurship Trust

The run was super. The weather, thanks to the rain god - it rained in the afternoon: was nice and cool..

we started a bit late but still were able to make the full 5k( approx) and be back by 8 pm. Not bad eh...thanks everyone...

A special one goes to Deepak (97 batch) from Stan Chart. He promised that he will come with his family (wife and 2 sons) and all of them did the whole run. A real WOW !...

Super job Deepak. I really admired your enthusiasm and the spontaneity. You are truly an XL soul. I hope we meet again and I really felt very happy for your kids and wife - they took the time and made all of us feel really PROUD.

Another special thanks should go to SCAMPY the loving adorable doggie and Nans (1983) and Shubha ( 1984) who made that happen. Scampy is so so adorable and was the darling of the party..

Talking about a party - thanks to Abhilasha to have made it to SBG after a party - even that shows true support and spirit.

Pity that many people said they will come but did not show up and did not message...

Oh I should not forget to thank Lavanya Rajesh for the super collection mechanism and t shirt logistics - thank you so much...

The location worked out really well. It was nice and cozy and we could use all the facilities etc till late.

I had asked Prof.Madhukar about increasing participation etc and he had indicated to me once in an e-mail - "if it is to happen and if the wishes are positive and there is good energy - the UNIVERSE will provide"...yes so it is.

When I arrived at 6.30 pm, honestly, I had my doubts and trepidations about the turn out - but I brushed the negativity aside and sent out many positive wishes and it seems like it all turned out well. what a dream (run) come true ...

I think the t shirts sold well and many million thanks to the new batches who have arrived in Singapore who fully supported the cause and made the contributions.

Thanks Dr Shree for spreading the word around.

I do want to just dial back on the objective we set and the next steps:

We did promise that we would raise $5K. Many people have supported us in this cause. shyam, aditya and few others have already indicated their contributions and our thanks goes to all of you..

We have to support the xl social entrprenuer trust. Like Rajesh said in his speech - it is not a charity. it is a business and business with a cause and they need the help. they are doing good work and we should not let this slip between the cracks. so guys and gals - it is up to us - and here is a great opportunity to pay it forward or give back or how/whatever you want to think about...

So friends - a small favor - even if you were not able to make it today it does not matter - find some time do your own run or walk - and send to us your contributions either to me or Rajesh. I think many of the people have our numbers - so please call

Since many of you are on vacation or last minute business travel etc - we are extending the date to make your contributions to 25 January 2009. Yes a good 6 weeks.

The Cause:
The XLRI Social Entrepreneurship Trust is supporting 3 Social Entrepreneuship Ventures by XL students who have decided to take the "road less travelled" as a career option. We are trying to provide them support through the initial incubation loans (thanks to the Rs 10.5lac contributions received from the XLRI batch of '81 and from the Jamshedpur Alumni Chapter)

I am training to run a marathon!! Completing a marathon means a victory of mind over body for me as I have no running experience and a regular busy life raising children and working full time not to mention the after effects of having twins on my body :-).
This intersects a passion of mine - helping at least some of the destitute children in India.

Save the Indian Tiger

Ok, this isn't related to campus, but its something I feel very strongly about & I wanted to get the message out to as many people as possible.

Many of you must have been following the news channels which have been highlighting the truth about the Indian Tigers as discovered by the latest census.

This census (perhaps the most credible one done in a very long time) states that the number of tigers in India today is just over 1400 with a probabilisitic survival rate in 2020 of under 10%. This rate assumes that no steps will be taken by us humans to correct this downward trend and all the reasons causing the falling population.

There is something we can do, even while sitting in the comfort of our homes or offices. We as a collective have the power to push our government to act.

NDTV is running a petition on their website and I hope that they are actually going to use that petition to bring the government to act (as opposed to simply using it as a gimmick to increase their eyeballs)

Our tigers are in deep trouble and there are at least 2 ways that you & I can act towards a solution.

1. Sign the Save the Tiger petition on NDTV

Hardly 15,000 people have signed it so far.

2. Log onto the prime minister’s website http://www.pmindia.nic.in/write.htm
and send him a polite mail (not more than 500 characters allowed in the mail, so choose your words with care), asking for the highest level of protection for India’s project tiger reserves. I request you to do this because tiger protection is not on his priority list - indeed, as the
Chairperson of the Wildlife Board, he can do a lot, but hasn’t. Our job is to put it high up on his agenda.

The one thing I request you to not do is to see this as someone else’s problem; it’s the least we can do. Also please forward this petition and this cause to your friends, so we can work to be the change we want to see in our country.
