XLRI shoots the full picture
From The Telegraph
Power point presentations make way for the full picture.
Students of XLRI’s social entrepreneurship course are making short five to seven-minute films to share their learning “on the field”.
The latest celluloid offering is Ek Koshish, a short film made on primary education in the state by four final-year students — Rajiv Sengupta, Prashant Singh, Kumar Ankit and Diwakar Kaushik.
This trend started from the batch of 2010. Different groups under the social entrepreneurship course have already made four short films, on topics like women contract workers, street hawkers, platform urchins and state primary schools.
Students felt filming observations was a better way to document what they had observed, rather than just presenting papers and slides.
“Filmmaking is a creative way to capture what we learn during our rural exposure. Though the report and presentation are a must, filmmaking enriches the learning experience. We can be more expressive,” said Diwakar, involved in the making of Ek Koshish.
Social entrepreneurship professor Madhukar Shukla welcomed the initiative.
“Students can capture nuances and emotions through films which is not possible in a detailed study report. Visuals have a different impact altogether. The field visit is a part of the course, where students learn about rural life and their problems. Students can also keep the films for their records,” said Shukla.
XLRI also plans to make filmmaking compulsory as a documenting tool but nothing has been made final.
“Shooting a film can be a unique experience, but there’s more to that. Last time, when a group of students interviewed and filmed women contract workers and screened it for us, we got to know their problems from a personal angle. It triggers the motivation for change,” said Shukla.
The course, an elective one to promote social ventures among students, is a two-term one of six months’ duration in the second year for business management and personnel management and industrial relations. So far, four social ventures after course completion have rolled out —Parichay, Dream4others, Samanvay and Green Leaf Energy.

Conversations with Female Contract Workers
These conversations with women contract labours in Jamshedpur were recorded by two XL students (Madhu Bala and Mahima) of the "Intro to Social Entrepreneurship" course @ XLRI during their field visit. These women get 10-15 days of work in a month, mostly at Rs 90-110/day for manual work on construction sites, which may last between 10-15hrs - with no creches, toilets, or drinking water facilities..
The family income varies between Rs 2000-4000 depending upon how many members work. Some had bank accounts, but hardly any savings. The daily struggle to survive would leave them ever-suspended in a present, with hardly any thoughts about their future. But what could be a "hope" is that they shared their assets/ resources with each other in the "basti", were less bothered/bound by "caste", and sent their children to school, as much as they could...

Thanks much Channel [v], MTV, CNN-IBN, Aaj-Tak, News 24, Zee-music, IBN-7, E-24 and others to air it without second thoughts. Also the radio stations to consider this song in their programming. Laksh Media has also decided to play it across all their displays across the city. If you like the message, hopefully you'd forward this video-link to everyone. Also, if you want to know how this video came about, here is the story:
Attacks left us shocked and numb. Alcohol was one medicine during and after conversations that would usually revolve around hopelessness, vulnerability, frustration. Few evenings later, out of the blue, Manish Gupta & Rima Das made a call 'lets do something about it' to our musician and lyricist friends Prashant Vadhyar and Niren Bhatt.. that's how it all began.
They came up with a rough scratch by next day evening.. which we shared with filmmaking community and requested help which so easily poured in. So many of us came together.. camera rentals, post-production facilities were donated, professionals offered their services.. Mumbai's true spirit was in full bloom.. everything then fell in place very quickly, we did it without spending any money.
Directors : Manish Gupta, Ami Thanawala, Dipti Nangia, Pritisagar Singh, Rima Das
Music :Prashat Vadhyar, Vishal Singh
Lyrics:Niren Bhatt
Editor:Manish Gupta
PR: Pritisagar Singh, Reena Pujara
Post Production : Shriji Dristi
Special thanks to : Mehul Nisar (Rodium Group), Samir Sheikh, Birju Boricha, Narendra Mojidra, Partho Mukherjee, Niti Mathur, Anand Modhe, Adil Wassen, Aghay Tiwari, Narendra Pahade, Jayant Mishra, 1Take Media, Ashish Vyas, Ashutosh Singh

Pictures and Video of Singapore Edition of XLRI Alumni Dream Run
13/12
XLRI Dream Run
Singapore
Botanic Gardens
Yes a whole lot of xlers in Singapore ran around the botanic gardens and felt really good to be a part of the community...in just a few hours and few steps we were able to build a great camaraderie and friendships. thanks to everyone who turned up and showed their support to xl and to the cause.
as you all may be aware by now, we were running to raise $ 5k for the XLRI Social Entrepreneurship Trust
The run was super. The weather, thanks to the rain god - it rained in the afternoon: was nice and cool..
we started a bit late but still were able to make the full 5k( approx) and be back by 8 pm. Not bad eh...thanks everyone...
A special one goes to Deepak (97 batch) from Stan Chart. He promised that he will come with his family (wife and 2 sons) and all of them did the whole run. A real WOW !...
Super job Deepak. I really admired your enthusiasm and the spontaneity. You are truly an XL soul. I hope we meet again and I really felt very happy for your kids and wife - they took the time and made all of us feel really PROUD.
Another special thanks should go to SCAMPY the loving adorable doggie and Nans (1983) and Shubha ( 1984) who made that happen. Scampy is so so adorable and was the darling of the party..
Talking about a party - thanks to Abhilasha to have made it to SBG after a party - even that shows true support and spirit.
Pity that many people said they will come but did not show up and did not message...
Oh I should not forget to thank Lavanya Rajesh for the super collection mechanism and t shirt logistics - thank you so much...
The location worked out really well. It was nice and cozy and we could use all the facilities etc till late.
I had asked Prof.Madhukar about increasing participation etc and he had indicated to me once in an e-mail - "if it is to happen and if the wishes are positive and there is good energy - the UNIVERSE will provide"...yes so it is.
When I arrived at 6.30 pm, honestly, I had my doubts and trepidations about the turn out - but I brushed the negativity aside and sent out many positive wishes and it seems like it all turned out well. what a dream (run) come true ...
I think the t shirts sold well and many million thanks to the new batches who have arrived in Singapore who fully supported the cause and made the contributions.
Thanks Dr Shree for spreading the word around.
I do want to just dial back on the objective we set and the next steps:
We did promise that we would raise $5K. Many people have supported us in this cause. shyam, aditya and few others have already indicated their contributions and our thanks goes to all of you..
We have to support the xl social entrprenuer trust. Like Rajesh said in his speech - it is not a charity. it is a business and business with a cause and they need the help. they are doing good work and we should not let this slip between the cracks. so guys and gals - it is up to us - and here is a great opportunity to pay it forward or give back or how/whatever you want to think about...
So friends - a small favor - even if you were not able to make it today it does not matter - find some time do your own run or walk - and send to us your contributions either to me or Rajesh. I think many of the people have our numbers - so please call
Since many of you are on vacation or last minute business travel etc - we are extending the date to make your contributions to 25 January 2009. Yes a good 6 weeks.
We'd like to send the contributions over to Madhukar by that time .... So there is time.
But don't wait. Just do it NOW. ..The spirit is in the giving and sharing and the time is perfect.
Love and Peace.
Best Wishes
Ramesh

XLRI Documentary
Rajesh (Ciggy - xl 99 - Singapore) says :
Karthik is a student @ XLRI Singapore Chapter
We had this at our Alumni meet on 22 September in Singapore.
Prof. Sarin was there and this was shown first there. There are about 30+ students here and they were all bubbling with enthusiasm.
We alumni shared our experiences and Karthik was kind enough to compile this from Madhukar's photo's on the web and then posted this on YouTube.
Message from Karthik : I am enrolled in PGDBM and a full time student here in Singapore, it was a pleasure to see that XLers all over the Globe liked the Documentary. The purpose of the documentary was to show how XL has grown over the years that are why 1 can see pics taken from the year 1949 till date.
