XLbang Happy Hours on Friday - Feb-1- Century Club

Dear Xler,

Kindly confirm your participation either on the XLBang events on facebook or by sending the sms per the details here below:

XLers are blessed with intellect, drive, ambition, connections and exposure; yet very few of us ever use these gifts to create our own enterprises. What stops XLers from making this leap into uncharted waters; where success leads to financial independence, a deep sense of fulfillment, employment generation, and a significant contribution to our country economic progress?
Is it because the outcomes of those who have made the leap are mixed? Is it the lack of inspiration despite the presence of XLers that have started extremely successful companies like Mindtree (N Krishnakumar, BM-81) and Ma Foi (K Pandiarajan, KPR, PM-84). Do our MBAs wire us only to serve large organized behemoths? How do we breakout and follow our dreams?
The XLBang Happy Hours on Feb 1 is a special session on Entrepreneurship to try and find out some of the answers to these questions. I will be hosting a discussion with some of our very own alumni who have made it, making it, and helping make it. The panel includes

http://onproductizing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/amitbansal.jpgAmit Bansal (BM-97) who started PurpleLeap with two other XLers (Vinay Nijhawan and Hemanth Somani). He first started with children’s education programs before changing track to finishing schools for college grads. His firm was later acquired by Educomp.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/photos.angel.co/users/61546-medium_jpg?1320476055Richik Nandi (BM-06) who follows what now seems to be the favoured route of marketing and product management with a leading software company before partnering with a friend to start Poshvine.com, an internet start-up aimed at cashing in on the growing market of food experiences.

Bharati Jacob (PM-83) has the envied job of meeting new start-ups every day and evaluating business ideas for investment worthiness. She has invested in some well-known ventures like Vaatsalya, Printo and RedBus; and has an inside track on what drives entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship.
Are you sitting on the fence with a great idea? Is the economy and business climate right for starting out? Join us to hear from those who have dared to make their dreams come true.

Tristate XLRI Alumni Meet: Oct 6th 5.30 PM

Friends,

Gerry Farias and I have been in touch with some of you offline to finalize the details of  the planned XLRI Alumni Meet on Saturday October 6th evening.  We have finalized AKBAR RESTAURANT (at Route 1 South in Edison NJ), as the venue based on the feedback received.  The details are as under:

Date and Time:  Saturday 6th October, from 5.30 PM till 11 PM.

Venue: Akbar Restaurant (Akbar Restaurant - Directions),
Off Route 1 South, 21 Cortlandt Street, Edison, NJ 08837   Tel: (732) 632-8822

The tab is $35 per person – this just covers the dinner, drinks and gratuities for the service, and the PA system, etc.  You can confirm your participation by email with the headcount and later pay by cash or check at the door. Format is informal, preferably with spouse, but no kids' activity has been planned (as we are expecting to hear the visitors speak and mingle with us).   Kindly confirm your attendance ASAP by email  to one of us below:

Gerard Farias (Gerry) – XL 81

For directions -
There is free parking at the venue.  The closest NJTransit train station is METUCHEN on the North East corridor Princeton/Trenton line. Do let us know if you need any help or info.

==============================

The main idea of the meet is to show up with our love, affection and gratitude to Prof Sarin and Fr Abe and of course, you know how we do it – in large numbers. Many of us know Prof Sarin and Fr Abe - it'd be a delight to meet with them in person.

Director Fr Abraham and Prof Sarin will share with us the many new developments at our alma mater, which has undergone a name change from `XLRI Jamshedpur' to `Xavier School of Management'.  Yes – we are now alumni of XSM !!

As I understand, they'd share with us the many exciting new developments that XSM has in mind, including the new branding of XLRI as XSM to prepare for a global brand launch, a new second campus in New Delhi, a growing list of student exchange programs with B-schools around the world, a growing strong faculty that is recognized by industry by their books and research.  The objective is also to:
(a) Strengthen, and give some shape and form to, our existing alumni networks in the US/Canada, and
(b) while it is not expected that any of us would cut checks overnight to the XEF – Xavier Endowment Fund, of which Prof Sarin is a Chairman (well, don't mistake me - of course, you are very welcome to do so if you are able to join the many that have done so with a large heart of gratitude) –we'd be discussing how best to contribute as US resident alumni to XEF over the next many years.

Look forward to seeing you on October 6th.. the wet bar opens at 5.30 PM, so please be early.
Warm regards,
Venkat Karimanasseri (`KNV')
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PS. We have booked a hall with an underlying commitment of atleast 50 people joining us for dinner.  So please email us and confirm your attendance with headcount ASAP. Thanks.

We had a small gathering but big fun a couple weeks back. This time around we are planning a more elaborate one in one of the DFW area parks. I am sending this to everybody so that people who are either travelling or are located somewhere nearby also can participate. It would be great to have all of us there on that day.

Looking forward to hear back from you soon.

XLRI Endowment Fund (XEF): WE ARE GAINING MOMENTUM

Dear

I am happy to share that as on April 1, 2012 we crossed the first milestone of XEF (XLRI Endowment Fund), crossing Rs.1 crore. This happened because of the generous contributions by :

Jose Parayanken (Rs.50 lakhs) : BME-81, Founder & Managing Director, Mozambique Holdings. Ltd. Recipient of the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in January 2012. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2011

Jaspal Bindra (Rs.20 lakhs) : BM-84, Group Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, Asia, Standard Chartered Bank, and Member, Board of Governors, XLRI. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2011

Vineet Nayar (Rs.5 lakhs) : BM-85, Vice Chairman & CEO, HCL Technologies, and Member, Board of Governors, XLRI. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2010

N Krishnakumar (Rs.5 lakhs) : BM-83, Co-Founder & Managing Director, MindTree Consulting. Recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2012

Surojit Shome (Rs.5 lakhs) BM-86, MD & Country Head, Rabobank International, India

Samir Sahu (PM-86)and Ingrid Sahu (BM-86) (Rs.5 lakhs)

Alok Sinha (BM-86)(Rs.5 lakhs), MD, Oil & Gas Group, Standard Chartered Bank

Harish K. (PM-85)(Rs.2 lakhs)

Chris Doyle (BM-73) (Rs.1 lakh)

Sudhir Mathulla (BM-84) (Rs.50,000)

Ashok Krishen (PMIR – 86)(Rs.5 lakhs)

Our analysis reveals, that as of April, 2012 the breakup of contributions has been:
Amount Contribution(s)
  • Rs.50 lakhs                          1
  • Rs.20 lakhs                          1
  • Rs.5 lakhs                            5
  • Rs.2 lakhs                            1
  • Rs.1 lakh                              10
  • Rs.50,000                             22
  • Below Rs.50,000                 16
Our target is to cross Rs.20 crores by the end of April 2013.This means we have to raise nearly USD 4 million. To meet this target, we plan to have alumni get-togethers in U.S.A., Dubai, and Singapore, besides alumni meets in the country.

Some of you are keen to know : what would XLRI do with the funds?
1. Upgrade the existing Physical Infrastructure to world-class standards. The new campus may cost us around Rs.50 to Rs.60 crores.
2. Create Chair Professorship. Each Chair would need around Rs.4 to 5 crores.
3. Scholarships or loan to the needy students.
4. Support Global Research.
5. Support the expenses for Global Branding of XLRI.
6. Support the social initiatives of XLRI in the area of education for poor, rural entrepreneurship and alike on a sustained basis.

A news write-up in April 5 Telegraph stated that IIM-A has set a target to raise Rs.250 crores, that is, approximately USD 50 million. By April 5, they have raised about Rs.8 crores, and in the Golden Jubilee Celebration held in December 2011, the alumni promised to contribute Rs.38 crores. I am confident Excellors would be equally generous.

Upcoming XLRI Alumni meets - Summer 2012

Kolkatta: 5th May
Pune: 12th May
Singapore: 19th/20th May
Delhi: 26th May
Mumbai: 2nd June
This is the tentative schedule.
Bangalore is confirmed and has a whole weekend lined up for the first ever Pan South India XLRI Alumni meet. Check 19th May weekend for more details.

Will keep updating as I get more information.

What are you doing on May 19th weekend?

Hey there,

Alumni meets are happening all over the globe this summer, but XLBang is going a giant step further and lining up an entire weekend of activities and we would love to have you with us in Bangalore (still can't think of it as Bengaluru) that weekend.

There's golf being planned for the 18th of May (for those who play golf - not newbies or wannabes).  Contact George Olapally for more details - ollapally@gmail.com

The Big Bash is at ITC Gardenia on the 19th and another lunch is being planned for the 20th. More details will be updated soon.

Director Fr. Abraham, Prof Sarin, Prof. Madhukar Shukla, Prof. Ray from campus,  Fr. Casmir Raj, Roshan Dastur- who has been around for more than 40 years at XLRI and the one-and-only Bishuda from XLRI.will also be there!!

Last years band for the XLBang Bash was completely made up of XLers, we are hoping for something similar this year too and Jishnu from Swarathma is providing the music studio for practices. A fashion show
by xlers and their family members, drinking, dancing, eating, networking, catching up are all on the agenda. XLBang has always taken special care of kids of xlers and activities are always organised to keep them entertained and occupied too, so they don't bug you by asking "are we going home yet?"

This year we are specially inviting alumni from all over for this meet, not just those in Bangalore. For your convenience, accomodation has been blocked at Century Club (Rs 2,000 on b&b basis), XIME hostel on Hosur Road (free -for those who can't find friends to pile on to), sightseeing tours are also being organised.
Contact Venkatesh at narsipur.venkatesh@gmail.com for acco and Vijay for Intercity travel and sight-seeing communicate2vijay@yahoo.co.in

We already have some sponsors lined up, but more are always welcome. Contact Tito - John Idicula on john.idicula@gmail.com if you or your company would like to capitalise on this opportunity to reach out to such a large group of XLers and their families.

A large part of the money generated by the event finds its way to worthy causes. Last year 50,000Rs was donated to provide vocational training for children of farmers suicides in Vidharba (near Nagpur). So we "party with a purpose" too.

Take a look at our new dedicated website for more details - http://xlbang.in and pre-register for the event to get the benefit of a discount.

So what are you waiting for? There's barely a month left, the sooner you book your tickets the better. If you can convince your company to send you to Bangalore on an "official" visit, nothing like it, but you don't really need an excuse to join us, do you?

First Pan South India XLRI Alumni Meet, Bangalore, May19th ,2012

Dear XLAlumni:

Greetings from XLBangalore, where we are already abuzz with excitement and  preparations for the First ever Pan-South India XL Alumni Meet, to be held on May 19th,2012.

By now many of you would have received a personal invitation from our Director, Fr. Abraham,s.j., to this event.

This way  Fr.Abe is saved the need to travel all over S-India to keep in touch with the dearly beloved XL alumni (he himself is from the class of '78), and we get to renew our bonding with long lost  buddies we have traveled with through Chennai,Nellore, Vishakapatnam,Sambalpur,Titlagarh etc. on the trains to Tatanagar. Apart from Fr. Abe, we will also have with us Prof Sarin, Prof. Jomon, Prof. Madhukar Shukla, and hopefully, many more.We may also have some surprise but dearly loved XL support staff in our midst that night.

It is said that the greatest asset(apart from the learning ), that one  takes away from an Ivy League Management Institute such as  XL, is the branding and the  Buddy network of the Alma Mater. The Pan-South India event thus  offers us a renewed  opportunity to strengthen the Branding and our bonding, for the benefit of the Institute, the community and ourselves .

As you all know,we have have a vibrant XL Community in Bangalore, full of bonhomie, over the last 25 years. In fact we have  over 300 attendees  at our Annual Gala Summer Meets, with live  XLBands, drawn from XL musicians down the generations including past members of Bodhi Tree ,and great Deejays recreating the WetNite Mood. This time we are targeting 500 attendees!!

We are in the process of putting in place a committee that will create a great event and  cater to your accommodation ,transport and post-meet sight-seeing needs .We also hope to have a website in place with all relevant information at one site.

We will keep you posted on a regular basis as our preparations unfold.
But make sure you block May 19th on your calendar .

Let's get together XL'ers.
See you on Sat,19th May in beautiful Bangalore, where the cool weather and the Mayflower and Jacaranda blossoms await you and let's create some XL Magic!

Looking forward to meeting you here!!,

Invitation - XLRI South India Alumni meet - Bangalore - May 19

Dear Karishma,

I was in Bangalore recently for the International HR Conference held at XIME and had the privilege of meeting Prof. Joe Philip (President, XIME), David D’Costa (President Bangalore Chapter), R. Sridhar (Executive VP – HR, ITC Kolkata), George Ollapally, among others.    It was a pleasure interacting with them.   In the course of our discussion, we have decided to have an alumni reunion of alumni based in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.

I write to you today to personally invite you for the Pan South India Alumni Meet in Bangalore scheduled on May 19, 2012.     The venue for the meet will be Hotel Windsor or Gardenia (Courtesy, R. Sridhar, ITC Hotels).

As far as accommodation is concerned, the Bangalore alumni have kindly agreed to host their batch mates where possible.    Prof. Joe Philip (President, XIME) has graciously consented to accommodate its hostels / residential facilities to the alumni from outstation for those who require it.

I am writing to you sufficiently in advance to enable you to kindly block the date.   I eagerly look  forward to this reunion and I sincerely hope to see you in Bangalore on May 19, 2012.

While I look forward to your response, please also mark your availability to :   dcosta.david@gmail.com
David has kindly agreed to coordinate the event and would need to know how many alumni from Chennai will be present for the  reunion.

I take this opportunity to thank David D’Costa and the XLBang Managing Committee for their efforts in assisting XLRI to make this reunion a grand success.

With best wishes,

Fr. E. Abraham, S.J.

Invitation from XLRI: Fr Arrupe Centre for Ecology & Sustainability

Dear friends

I am happy to invite you for inauguration of
Fr Arrupe Centre for Ecology and Sustainability (FACES)
at the
Learning Centre, XLRI
at
11:00am on January 14th, 2012

I am happy to share that Dr Ajoy Kumar, MP East Singhbhumi has accepted to be the chief guest at the function. Dr Harish Hande, Managing Director, SELCO-India and Ramon Magsaysay Awardee 2011 will deliver the keynote speech on the theme of “Sustainable Energy for Rural and Under-served Markets” on the occasion.

While Dr Ajoy Kumar needs no introduction for the citizens of Jamshedpur, I am pasting a short note on the Centre and on SELCO and Dr Hande below.

---
Fr Arrupe Centre for Ecology and Sustainability is a multi-disciplinary activity centre at XLRI to provide thought leadership to promote policies, practices and dialogue which have impact on holistic and sustainable development of society and enterprises. The Centre will engage in three key activities of

(1) Knowledge Creation (e.g., undertaking and sponsoring research on and documentation of sustainable programmes, enterprise models and practices),
(2) Knowledge Dissemination (e.g., organizing conferences and roundtables to provide a platform for sharing sustainable models of development) and
(3) Knowledge Application (e.g., providing thought leadership for “Embedded Sustainability” through consultancy / MDP / capacity building programs).

----
SELCO Solar Light Private Ltd. (SELCO-India)  is one of the largest solar technology providers in India, having reached more than half-a-million people by installing solar lights in 120,000 households, microenterprises, and community facilities.

By achieving this scale, SELCO has demonstrated that the poor can indeed afford sustainable technologies and maintain them. SELCO adopts a three-prong strategy for reaching the poor -  it offers “customized products” by designing solar technology applications to specific needs of the customers (e.g., 2- or 4-light system for the home, head lamps for night workers like midwives and rose pickers, or electricity for sewing machines); it provides “doorstep financing” by linking the customers with credit institutions, like rural banks, cooperatives, even self-help groups; and it provides “doorstep service” through prompt, personalized help through its wide network of service centers.

For his work Dr Harish Hande was awarded the 2011 Ramon Magsaysay Award (considered to be the Nobel Prize of Asia)  as a recognition of “his passionate and pragmatic efforts to build social enterprise that brings customized, affordable and sustainable electricity to India’s vast rural population, encouraging the poor to become asset creators.”

Dr Harish Hande is a B.Tech (Hons.) from IIT, Kharagpur, and holds a PhD degree in Energy Engineering from University of Massachusetts, U.S.A. He was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2007, and was also the recipient of Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy (U.K.) 2005 and 2007, and Tech Museum Award (USA) 2005.
