XLRI honours Narayana Murthy with peace medal

RANCHI: Chairman emeritus and chief mentor of Infosys N R Narayana Murthy has been chosen for the prestigious Sir Jehangir Ghandy Medal for Industrial and Social Peace 2012 by Xavier Labour Relations Institute. Murthy will receive the award in Jamshedpur on April 4.

H M Nerurkar, chairman, board of governors, XLRI and MD Tata Steel will present the prestigious medal to Murthy during the convocation ceremony at Tata auditorium.

"This year we have decided to honour N R Narayana Murthy with the prestigious award for Social and Industrial Peace," said XLRI director Fr E Abraham.

The award was instituted by XLRI in 1966, in honour of the late Sir Jehangir Ghandy, former chairman of XLRI board of governors.

The medal was instituted in gratitude for his yeoman service to the institution and the society at large. One of the oldest medals instituted by a higher education institution, the medal is awarded during XLRI's annual convocation ceremony to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of industrial and social peace in the country.

So far, 43 distinguished people have received the award including Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, who was conferred the prestigious award in 2011. Industrialists JRD Tata, Ratan Tata, B L Munjal and politicians P A Sangma, Jyoti Basu among others are the popular names, who have already received the list.
